- Hard Drive – 500GB SATA 3.0Gbps
- 2u Rackmount Server Chassis – ARK? With 2 x 80mm fans
- 500 watt Power Supply - APEVIA
Assembling the 1u chassis
I installed the motherboard with the embedded CPU into the 1u rackmount chassis.DOH!! The 24 pin ATX power cable from the power supply won’t reach to the motherboard connector. So now I have to buy a 24 pin male to 24 pin female power supply extension cable.
Assembling the 2u Chassis
Everything seemed to fit into the chassis okay. The ASUS motherboard still stands a little high above the standoffs, so I put some small washers between the standoffs and the motherboard. Everything screwed in nice. There is about 1\8th of an inch clearance between the top of the CPU fan and the chassis cover. I turned it on for about 20 minutes without the cover on and watched the CPU gauge. The temperature hovered around 32 to 33 degrees centigrade. I put the cover on and continued to monitor it, but couldn’t really discern much of a difference - maybe a degree or two hotter. Not bad.
Unlike the 1u chassis, this chassis did not come with a power supply. So I had to buy one separately. This one has all sorts of neon lights in it with a clear plastic case. I bought it not because of the lights, but because the power supply fan was not on top of the power supply case. Any fan on top of the power supply would have been covered by the cover of the server chassis defeating the whole purpose of having a fan in the first place. There were not very many power supplies to choose from that had fans in the front and rear of the power supply.
